Are there actual rules to writing?


Yes. And no.


Writing comes easily to some. Words flowing from their fingers as if writer's block were nothing but a myth, while others struggle to come up with a steady stream of thought to put on paper. Aside from the basic writing struggles, there are some rules when writing. Keeping up the pace, showing rather than telling, keeping your facts straight while fiction can and is part of your imagination. Whenever you use first person POV you can't use third person POV - not everyone knows that, switching paragraphs when switching from one character to the next, would be the basics.

And yet, there aren't any rules as to how to write. Your imagination is your own and even if you came up with a similar idea as to what you've just read, the wording would be different, emotional aspect would change, characters wouldn't be the same. Plagiarizing is, of course, frowned upon, but we do get ideas from the books we read yet our writing is our own.

Nothing is taboo when writing. Every subject, thought, change, can be considered and included in your writing. Your characters can be whoever and whatever you wish them to be, from whichever planet they desire. Limits don't exist. We write what we like. The only thing we have to consider is whether anyone else might enjoy the same as we do.
