17 June is Father's Day. According to my research, Father's Day was acknowledged as early as the middle ages in Catholic Europe. It was celebrated on St. Joseph's feast day which is a different month than what we celebrate now. In the U.S., it was first acknowledged on 5 JUL 1908 in Fairmont, VA in honor of those Father's lost in a mining accident. Nationally, while it was introduced in Congress as early as 1913, it wasn't until Richard Nixon when it was signed into law in 1972. My thoughts? If your father is with you, let him know how much he's appreciated.
21 June is the first day of summer! What do you do to celebrate Summer? My favorite summer memories are when we used to visit Avalon on Catalina Island for the 4th of July. I always enjoyed seeing the golf cart parade and hearing the USC Marching band. The fireworks display over the bay was amazing. What are some of your favorite summer memories?

Last month, I talked about the empowered female heroine and how this maybe a bit of trend as the #metoo grows, especially as readers of romance, need to identify with heroine. To "piggyback" on that, I thought I'd explore some more well know romantic female archetypes this month. They include:
The Amazon
The Librarian
The Nurturer
The Girl Next Door
The Seductress
The Amazon is preciously that - Wonder Woman. They are powerful, competitive, and confident. She's noble, with a fierce personality who tends to hide her hurt than deal with it. She's a leader in a male dominant world. Examples of the "Amazon" that come to mind are Eowyn from Lord of the Rings, and of course "Wonder Woman" who is played to perfection by Gal Gadot.
The Librarian is a studious and intelligent young lady who is usually the smartest person in the room. She's very analytical, but struggles to make human connections. Most heroines in the 70's and 80's had a "Librarian" heroine. She's a great person, but she needs a lesson in the world. Kathleen Turner's character "Joan Wilder" from Romancing the Stone comes to mind. Hermoine Granger from "Harry Potter" is another heroine that comes to mind.
The Nurturer cares for others and sacrifices her own happiness for others. She has a lot of responsibility on her shoulders and little time to herself. I often think of "nannies" in the nurturer role who win the heart of the hero, and of course Fran Drescher's Nanny comes to mind.
The Girl Next door has a great attitude and is always ready to help. They're always the best friend. Modern girl next door heroines are usually a bit more opinionated and they like to laugh. And isn't laughter an attractive quality? Meg Ryan's "Top Gun" role comes to mind.
The Seductress is manipulative and sexually driven. She's assertive and mysterious and is another one who hides their past. The challenge here is that the sexual component must be believable. Anne Boleyn comes to mind.
Ultimately, what makes these heroines stand out is a layering of more nuanced qualities which help to them real, flawed, and identifiable to romance readers.

One of my favorite heroines is Freja, from the movie Outlander. She is strong, competent, compassionate, nurturing, bold, and at the same time frail. She can wield a sword as well as many a man, but doesn't begrudge them when she needs rescuing; and even manages to assist in her rescue. The movie is an excellent cross between sifi, and fantasy, and is one of my favorites.
I haven't seen the movie in quite a while, but yes, I remember her character. I think I need to pull up a bowl of popcorn and rewatch!
