This newsletter discusses some methods of finding direction, which comes in handy when going out on an adventure.

Letter from the editor

One big question when it comes to adventure that should come up is: Where is the character going? That can mean a number of things. Where is the story itself going? What direction should the character take in order to get where they want to go? This is also where we can show or tell the reader things, depending on the way the story develops. A reader could be told where the character needs to go but throughout the story, they are also shown the directions they take with their lives. So, let's consider the topic and maybe find a sense of direction to use.

Character Direction

Where is the character going in life? Do they know or is it a surprise for them too? A story in some ways is about how they find their way through trials and adventures of the story being created. Or in the story their lives create since it is about what happens in their lives in general. Some of them might have a general idea of where things are going to go, or at least where they think they are going. Others, not even a clue. The struggle of finding a sense of direction in their life could even be a big part of the plot.

And since we're talking about action and adventure, there is the general issue of physical locations. The characters might need to get somewhere and need a method to get there. What will they use to find their direction?

Devices

There are a few different options when it comes to devices that could give the character a sense of direction. The compass is a common choice since it's known for that particular use. If it's a more modern type of story, there are more technology driven things you could use for the story like cell phones and gps systems. Or you can go back to the standard paper copy for finding a place known as a map. Those come in handy too. Suppose a magic mirror could help, maybe, though those can be so unreliable.

Method of Travel

Aside from the where, there is then the question of how will they get there? The type of travel will show a lot about the world and some about the characters. Is flight possible? Does the character have a fear when it comes to water? Or, are there financial reasons for the method of travel? Whether building a whole new world or setting within the familiar, these are some things to consider if the characters are going to go somewhere. Many stories involve more than one location after all. Some of the travel might be done off the page (or screen) and not known to the readers but there are times when we want to show a little of how the characters move from place to place. Plus, some action/adventure might happen along the way. Not every trip is smooth sailing.

That's the questions of the day from me and pretty sure that I asked enough of them. Now, consider where your characters want to go, what they will use to find their way and how they are going to get there. Then have fun and write.

How do your characters find a sense of direction?


It has been a little while since I last edited the Action Adventure Newsletter. In July, I wrote about dinosaurs back then and here are the comments sent in regards to the topic.

You piqued my interest when I read your title. I'm a sucker for Jurassic Park and Jurassic World. Whenever you get a chance, do see the newest installment in the Jurassic Park/World saga. Like in the last movie, there's a new dinosaur that I thought looked really cool. I won't spoil anything beyond that so you'll still have the majority of surprises waiting for you when you reach the movie theatre or when you buy it on DVD or online if you didn't get to watch it at the movie theatre.

- I do need to check out the movie one of these days.

This NL is so basic it was a joy to read. Writing in its truest form. Your questions could be applied to many genre. Vampire-really who many hybrids do we need? Dragons? Can we live on the moon? or in space? This news letter breaks down the form of writing a great story. Thank you for reminding us what we love to do.
