Mystery vs. Evidence


The explanation to mysteries is something that you have to believe without proof. You have to trust that those who would tell you about mysteries they solved to tell you the truth. As much as they are able to tell the truth.

Science can help in giving evidence for the solution to a mystery, but it can never prove it fully. There is always going to be that moment where you have to believe what is shown as evidence for a mystery.

When two (or more) people give you the same story, but from different points of view, whom do we believe?

An example from recent news was a case of a gay black man saying that he was attacked in the street by two men. From his side, those two men were attacking him in an unprovoked manner. In his story, they yelled homophobic and racist phrases at him while beating him, putting a noose around his neck, and throwing a chemical fluid at him.

On the other side of this story is that of two black men with family ties to Nigeria. In their story, the man paid them to attack him. Their story tells a tale of a conspiracy to bring attention to the man who claims to have been attacked.

The court of public opinion (of which nobody was at the incident in question) says the attacked man staged the attack to gain fame and become a higher paid actor. Other parts of the court of public opinion are appalled at the idea of someone staging such a thing and want to wait to hear all the facts.

The truth is ... hidden in the days (weeks?) leading up to that night and within the night itself. Everything we will hear about the mystery of that night will be tainted by the perception of those who will tell us about it. There is evidence that has been found linking the two black men to making purchases for the items used during the attack. There is evidence that the three men knew each other for several months or even years before the attack.

The real mystery: Why did this happen? Will stay shrouded in ... (wait for it) mystery. Unless those three men decide to be 100% honest. But none of them has any benefit from that. Somebody is going to get punished for what happened. We're still waiting for the justice system to decide who should get punished.

As a mystery writer, you can use this news story to let your readers feel as helpless and misinformed until you give them the stunning conclusion to your mystery story. Make sure to present compelling evidence from both sides to thicken the plot.
