*Delight*Hello! I am happy to be your guest editor for this week. It was National Indigenous People's Day In Canada on June 21 and I was reading some of Al Hunter's poetry.

Letter from the editor

Al Hunter is an Ashinaabe writer and member and former chief of the Rainy River First Nations in Canada. Well versed in land claims negotiations, he has long been an activist on behalf of indigenous rights, wellness and environmental responsibility. He was recognized as Ashinaabe Achiever in the #3 Treaty Nation for his environmental and educational work in 2000.

He is married to Sandra Indian and together they led "A walk to Remember" in 2000. They lead a group 1200 miles around Lake Superior to inspire a community rememberance and vision of protecting of air, water, land for the next seven generation. I read that the walk was like a migrating village in the ways of the Ashinaabe tribes and drew people together.

Al has poetry written and published in many journals and anthologies like "Canadian Literature", "New Breed" and "Days of Obsidian". He has taught and performed internationally.

His published works include: Spirit Horses, The Recklessness of Love: Dreams and Regrets, Beautiful Razor: Love Poems and Other Lies and the anthology, Sing, Poetry on the Indigenous America.

"It is useless to shield my jugular

I offer up my throat
A forgone conclusion

I offer my silent thanks
To the sharpening strap

The object of our mutual affection

The razor and mine"

Goodbye to This Hurt Town

Goodbye to this Hurt Town
My heart isn’t rent to own
Pain is in the squeaky floors
It’s peeling off the walls
It’s wailing through the open doors
I won’t be taking your calls

“I’m done,” read
Her message in a bottle
Go on then, darling, go on
I’m saying goodbye to this Hurt Town

Goodbye to this Hurt Town
My heart isn’t rent to own
Pain is in the squeaky floors
It’s peeling off the walls
It’s wailing through the open doors
I won’t be taking your calls

“I love you. I hate you,” said,
The whiskey and the rum
Which is it, my love?
Hate straight up
Or love on the rocks?

It is said that his works are healing songs for the earth and people's spirits and he is a spoken word performer and has participated in Eco poetry readings with other authors and musicians.

Al lives in Manitou Rapids, Rainy River First Nations half way between Thunder Bay and Winnipeg. He is a proud member of the Caribou clan and honours its responsibilities of peace making, reconciliation, preservation of the artistry and ways of the Ashinaabe.
