I'm interested in finding out how hip-hop fans feel about the direction of the genre |
| In the early days of Hip-Hop, the music had a raw edge to it, it was socially conscious, and there was a variety of styles within this genre. There was also more originality in the music with tools such as the human beat box, scratching, and minor sampling from old R&B songs. In addition, Hip-Hop didn't just consist of music; it included other aspects such as graffitti art, break dancing, and urban gear such as Adidas shoes. For example, if you liked consciousness in music, you could listen to Public Enemy or NWA. If you were into party rap, you could listen to RUN DMC, LL Cool J, or DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince. If you liked alternative rap, you could listen to De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, or Arrested Development. By the 90s, there were two main rappers that really stood out; Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. Tupac Shakur was based on the West Coast and he was a socially conscious rapper who talked about real issues in the black community such as drugs, crime, poverty, racism, and hopelessness among the youth. But he also had songs that some viewed as degrading to women. He was with Death Row Records. Meanwhile, the Notorious B.I.G. was based on the East Coast and he mainly rapped about his rise to the top and the dark side of fame. Unfortunately there was a coastal rival that led to the tragic deaths of these talented men. It started in 1994 when Tupac was shot in an elevator by apparent robbers. Tupac blamed the Notorious B.I.G. for the shooting, which wasn't true because B.I.G. was at another location at the time of the shooting. Tupac took shots at B.I.G. in some of his songs, and he claimed to have an affair with B.I.G.'s wife, R&B singer Faith Evans. Tupac Shakur was killed in 1996 in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. A year later, B.I.G. was killed in the same manner in Los Angeles while leaving an awards show. As the 21st century approached, we saw a new wave of hip-hop artists such as Ludacris, Nelly, Chingy, T.I., Eminem, and others. Hip-Hop continues to have a global impact through music, fashion, and movies. How do you feel about hip-hop today? |
