Whisperer: worth putting out a book with Publish America, info I considered. (TimeCapsule)

Author’s Note: I felt compelled from inside sources, but never leapt without asking. Nearly 20 years ago. The true consensus is out there.

But, in here? Motivations? Long since dead. *Grave*

Publish America offered to publish my collection of poetry and I did some checking, because I wasn't sure. Some authors at Writing.Com have had experiences with them, even published. Others have heard stories. I Googled the internet and saw plenty to make me think twice.

From what I've read, this is not a traditional publishing house. Publish America (PA) doesn't charge the author to put a book into print, but it appears they don't stock them either. They claim they are not print on demand, but the way they do business would suggest otherwise.

It's reported PA doesn't put out a catalog of titles to be ordered, and that they don't have editors per say who will edit copy, just run it through spell check. PA gives a 20-30 percent discount to the author depending on amount ordered with 2 free copies. It's also said they overprice their product.

Brian Palmer is a Writing.Com member who has published his first novel through Publish America. I read that PA does not accept returns on books purchased by bookstores, but was surprised to find the California author indeed had not one but three copies of his book on the shelves, and of all places, at the Green Bay Barnes & Noble.

This is a great opportunity. If I put many long hours into this book's promotion, I could sell upwards of a 1,000 copies on my own. Depending on how PA prices this book will depend on whether this all out effort will be worth it. Another thought I had was with my first published book, I could get my foot in the door for future projects, or will it?

Is Publish America's reputation tarnished? Will another publisher consider printing this author's next manuscript having been previously published this way? Will an agent then consider taking on a client with the Publish America credit?

Lots for me to consider. I need the audiences input. I've used up all my other lifelines, and still a long way to go to becoming the "Millionaire." What do you think?

Should I publish with Publish America?
The ultimate dream is publication, is it not? As a member of Writing.Com, I have learned of places to go shop my manuscript. I wonder at times if I am the only person to have heard of Whitmore Publishing? This publisher is intriguing and I encourage you to take this survey and let me know what you think, or if you've heard of this traditional publishing house whose name has been around for over 45 years.

And...

Another publisher you can learn more about is Publish America, and have the option of casting your own vote at the end...
