Broken Dreams

1823 St. Haboure

Standing in front of her own reflection the lady could not yet feel the true beauty, still felt as if something were missing.
The sun was slowly sinking as darkness started appearing. Such a pleasant weather it had been today. The wonderful luncheon meeting with the Earl of Hyvelly and his wife.
The Earl’s wife the lovely Countess Madeline had been such a divine lady. Such lovely curls of hair she had, as the wind passed through those wonderful blonde curls she looked as the beautiful ancient goddess Venus especially when the sun reflected into the soft beautiful face of hers. She had eyes worth dying for, green deep emerald eyes shaped as the round chocolate they had for dessert. If any man were to have the unlucky way to perish, surely they’d be happy to die all in the love to gaze into Lady Madeline’s beautiful eyes for they would see no more reason for living but only the will to look into her eyes.
Yes the countess had beautiful eyes even the Duke himself could not remove his eyes from her. Just the sights of watching him do this still hurt. Jealousy still stung through every single nerves of Lady Angelica, as she looked into her reflection in the big wooden mirror the Duke had bought for her.
Surely, everyone new the Duke of Haboure had his way with the women. Never faithful to any of them. Neither had Angelica expected him to give her his all attention at the luncheon this afternoon. However surely as his mistress she deserved a little respect.
Just the thought of receiving any respect from the Duke made her laugh.
Certainly, she was being silly. Dare she mention this thought to the Duke himself he’d laugh at her face. The Duke cared less of anybody but himself. He treated Angelica likewise as a man would treat a whore from the London street, like dirt. Yet she had to put on to his behaviour all in the sake of having a roof over her head. Oh surely she was glad of the glamorous life the Duke offered her. Then could the fame of wealth cover the fear she had staying with the Duke?
Everyday she saw him his sight made the worst of her, for she felt deep down disgusted just seeing him. Even worst was having to share bed with him in the evenings. When they would ensnared in their passionate lying.
The Duke had been alone for so many years in stubbornness of never re-marrying after his poor wife the Lady Victoria had died.
Since the Lady had left him an heir, he saw no favour in marrying though he still had a way with the women. Taking them as his mistresses. Giving them what they wanted in passion but also in wealth.
Being a little girl Angelica thought of the Duke as a father alongside with her real father, whom the Duke had a close relationship with in friendship.
Growing up into a lady the Duke started seeing interest in her. He wanted to court her though she denied his offer. She knew the Duke did not want to marry her but take her as one of his mistresses.
There had been several reasons she denied the Dukes offer. One of the reasons was the age difference between them also because she dreamt of True love. Knowing then that the Duke would not give her this and certainly, she was right.
‘There is nothing as True Love’ her father had growled to her when she had spoken out her own thought towards this issue.
‘But papa what about what you and mama had, was that not True love’ she had asked then.
If her father had heard her, he showed no sign of answering her back.
All he replied in return was this
‘The Duke is offering you a better life in which I can never give you, if you have any sense child, you shall accept this offer and if not neither shall you live under my roof, I shall not allow my child to go around and prostitute in the streets of England just in favour of looking for Love’.
‘I am not going to share pillows with that woman deceiver’ and with those words she left the room with an angry father determined no matter what to give away her daughter to the Duke.
So he had done, and Angelica still thought that the fathers sudden death was a punishment from God to Augustus for forcing his only daughter to the
