This is a poem from my book "When I Have Gone Away" on Lulu.com
The Storm

Lying motionless in the dark
Listening to the splatter of the rain
Upon my window pain
Tap… tap… splat!
Suddenly!
KABOOM! KABOOM!
The rumbling of the drum
The house trembles…
Windows rattle…
Sliding slightly beneath the covers
I begin to count
Ten… nine…eight
FLASH! FLICKER!
The room lights up…
Shadows dance with delight
KABOOM! KABOOM!
The wailing of the drum
Hush… hush… whispers the tree
Wind whipping through its leaves
Spat… splat…tap!
The rains frantic rhythm
Slightly changes its tune
Perhaps weary of its song
Seven… six…five
Kaboom! Kaboom!
The wailing of the drum!
But wait…
Does the drum beat softer now?
Flash!
The room lights up…
Shadows dance…
Three… two… one
At last!
Its song is done
