introspective poetry on my birthday
cherubic revolutions of the sun
languishing for my annual rendezvous
with this magical day

curiously,
this time ‘round the track
I find placidity
regaling myself with silent tales of days gone bye
as I rest soulward

cynicism,
my mind’s prodigal son returns
and draws me down dark
rutted paths toward dilapidated dreams and
happiness niggardly rationed

knocked off my mind’s melancholy perch
pure youthful energy from
sweet begotten laughter
blowing under azure eyes amid ponds of sun-dried freckles
floods elation of a thousand youthful birthdays

somber retrospection
surrenders to indomitable contentment
and reality dares to question
if time can be eternally measured by single digit birthdays
and true ages lose luster
before candles enumerate
and reality scars
