A poem about seeing yourself for the first time.
In the mirror I search for me,
The beauty that I long to be,
Mesmerized I have to stay,
Though I want to turn away,

In the mirror I search for me,
Intent upon reality,
One dimension that is shown,
An outer shell seems not my own,

In the mirror I search for me,
A stranger’s face is all I see,
How unjust that dreaded glare,
not a glimpse of me in there,

In the mirror I search for me,
Sifting through my life’s debris,
Teary eyed and heart downcast,
Who I am I see at last,

Beyond this image of reflected light,
There is me, though out of sight,
Who I am is strength and heart,
The mirror sees just one small part,

If it’s me you seek close your eyes,
Just look past this flesh disguise,
I am my words, I am my heart,
It’s in these places you must start,

The person I am is deep inside,
The mirror and my mind collide,
To see my soul just draw nearer,
For you won’t find me in the mirror.
