I love the Native ways and cultures. This reminds me of their ideas.
Sixty days until tomorrow
And a life that’s filled with pain and sorrow.
Suffering here on this open ground
With no one but you to make a sound.
But keep it to yourself you must
So as not to break the fragile trust
That with the earth is kept in stone
And given to you, and you alone.
The sun that rises in the east
Shines its light on every beast
Whether it be eating or digging ground
A count must be made on your daily rounds.
And you must ask forgiveness from those on high
‘Cause the numbers you show cannot lie;
For you were entrusted with all of life
to keep and protect with all your might.
To keep them from the white man’s harm
Which keeps reaching out with extended arm.
No matter where you go or how hard you try
This ‘simple’ matter will not pass you by.
They kill and maim and throw you off –
The balance of life is all but lost.
And you condemn them forever to shame
‘Cause it’s on them that lies the blame.
Now you sit alone in space
Wondering about this other race
And how they could kill so freely and proud
And cover her song with noise so loud.
But patiently you’ll wait, for the time will come
When the white ghost’s reign is finally done.
