An brief glimpse into an addicts' life.....
Even as the first rays of sunshine kiss her eyelids awake, it gnaws at her insides
Pain, suffocation, death….
The same feelings every morning, everyday
As the sunlight filters through her windows…..

Her eyes snap open and she kicks the covers off her skinny, shivering, lifeless body
She tries to get up off the dirty, stained, putrid smelling mattress
But to no avail
Her thoughts don’t make sense anymore
She forgets the reason why she wanted to get out of bed in the first place….

Then it hits her…..
Desperation
She jumps off the bed and onto the dirty floor
The oh-so dirty floor which is littered with little bits of tin foil, used condoms, empty lighters and black, bent, melted spoons….
She bounds over to the corner of the small room and begins to frantically tug up the carpet…
She pulls and pulls and pulls…..and realizes that the clear plastic envelope, so meticulously placed, and hidden, the night before, is missing.

Anguish, despair, frustration
Fanatically, she digs
She claws through the thin carpet and begins to scratch the surface of the wood floor…
Her nails break off and still, she continues, digging, and rocking and mumbling
The tears break free and she sobs uncontrollably
She loses control and starts to hear the voices again…

The packet appears,
Casually sitting on top of the carpet, as if by a miracle…
The sobbing stops and is replaced with a maniacal laugh….
She grabs the nearest needle and proceeds to inject herself…..

Tranquil, Peace
She lies on her back and stares into the abyss of her mind…
The battle is over
For yet another hour.....
