A poetic piece about a family heritage lesson.
The Red Box was originally written as a memorial piece to my Grandmother, Ona. Over a year was spent, composing this in my head. I even wrote bits and pieces of it. But nothing would gel. Just before St. Patricks Day of 2006, rapidly, I put pen to paper to celebrate our Irish heritage. When I sat down to write it, the story fell together. It was a perfect fit! This piece is the result of all those efforts.

This story is based on little known, actual historical events from the Civil War. It's a story that has been passed down to me by grandmother, from my great, great, grandfather. To this day, the gold cord and the Red Box referred to in these pieces, lie hidden in a closet in my parents home. I hope you enjoy this as much I have in writing this for everyone's enjoyment.

The Red Box is a grandmother's explanation about family heritage, a conversation, an experience, a piece of historical information as it's taught to her granddaughter.
