A myth of how lightning and rain came to be
Eesha and Himmin
Once upon a time there was a little girl. Her name was Eesha, which means water. Her hair was soft and white. When she laughed people could hear it for miles around. She could make water appear from nowhere. Her father was a farmer and she made water for his crops so that he didn’t have to carry it from the river. You see back then they didn’t have rain. Sometimes people passing by would see Eesha making water for her father. One day the king heard of the Eesha’s mysterious gift. He sent his servants to fetch her. She came to the palace.
“I hear that you can make water,” the king said.
“That is true,” Eesha replied.
“What is your name, child?” the king asked.
“I am Eesha,” Eesha said.
“Can you make me a flood so that I may drown my enemies?” the king asked.
“I can,” Eesha said.
“Good,” the king said.
“But I won’t,” Eesha said. “I use my gift for good.”
“But it would be good to be rid of my enemies,” the king said.
“If you turned this around and I had went before the other king and he told me to produce a flood to kill you would you think it good?” Eesha asked.
“No,” the king said. “But that did not happen and you are here and I order you to drown my enemies.” Eesha shook her head.
“Your heart is evil,” she said. “I will not listen to you unless you ask me for something good.”
“Guards!” the king said. “Through her into the dungeon.” The guards obeyed the king and Eesha was thrown into the dungeon. But there was already someone in the dungeon. The king had forgotten that he had also thrown a boy into that very same dungeon. Eesha stayed in the dungeon with the boy for three years. They fell in love. One day the boy asked, “Why were you thrown into the dungeon?” Eesha told the story of the water and the king.
“I can glow so bright that it blinds people,” the boy said. “The king asked me to blind all his enemies but I didn’t. I also hold one wish.” Then Eesha had an idea. She had always wanted to float in the sky so she told Himmin, which was the boy’s name, her idea. So the boy used his wish to bring Eesha and himself up to the skies. And Himmin became the lightning and Eesha became the clouds and her laughter became the thunder. And they’re always in the sky dancing with each other. And they created a terrible drought for the king and seeing the awfulness of it the king asked for forgiveness and became a kind man and good king.
