Falling in Love with Love

                                              Old Hull, Quebec. October 10, 2006.

Bishops, like politicians, are suspected
Of fudging truth to gain a step ahead;
Mystics, like poets,more easily win our trust:
The Church promotes them only when they're dead.

Now, mystics all agree that God is Love:
A flood of love that inundates the heart,
A love they feel to be more close than they
Are to themselves -- for dry souls split apart.

The chamber where love makes its dwelling place
Lies in a recess hidden from the mind:
The soul's true center, to the self unknown,
A place that only love itself can find.

They tell us, too, that love is everywhere;
It is our world, our atmosphere, our breath,
Our nourishment, our life, our element:
For us, where love is not is living death.

Awareness of this love that they call God,
This further dimension of depth, deeper than deep,
This fire that warms within and all about,
Seems not to come from doctrine or belief.

For, even the love that pairs of lovers share
Strikes them like an arrow from above,
And yet, to make it theirs, they need to fall,
Abandoning all control -- like fools -- in love.

Are we to understand that a fifth dimension
Lies open to  unbelievers like me and you,
That we could  fall out of ourselves -- like clowns of God --
And into an ocean of love, if we only knew?
