Foolish to think my love would be returned and that my love could hold you.
Staring in stunned disbelief,
My broken heart, once whole,
Cradled awkwardly in your hands.
I tried to leave, God knows I tried.

Finding the way, I stumbled in quicksand.
Your face, statuesquely, carved icy flesh,
Showed no emotion for me.
You disposed of me and my memory,
Apparently, it was all too easy.

I thought my love could hold you,
Believed my love could hold you.
Caged birds fly free eventually,
Because there's nothing to hold them down.

I was foolish to believe I could love you,
But no more foolish than to believe I could hold you.
