IT WAS IN THE NEWS TODAY!


The news that I read in the paper today,
Is not about policies, or what governments say.
It's not about thieves or teenagers in strife,
It's something that's going to affect my own life.

You may think the 'powers that be' have decreed,
To pay me more money, now, that's what I need!
But it's not: nor is it that I've been selected
To meet someone famous or highly respected.

My neighbour next door has lived there for a while,
We chat and take tea, and exchange a warm smile.
She rents her small cottage, and that is my wail,
For in the paper today -- HER HOUSE IS FOR SALE!!

Panic set in -- I read the ad slow,
Someone will buy, and she'll have to go.
Who now will I get to live next to me?
And with whom will I share a chat and some tea?

Oh, will it be boys who own noisy cars?
Or people with dogs who belong behind bars?
Maybe musicians? I like music, okay?
But I don't like it pushed down my throat night and day!

Will they care for the garden, and keep it all neat?
Or make such a mess and devalue the street?
They'll probably have kids who make lots of noise,
And throw balls 'cross the fence, and fight over toys.

(Oh dear. When we bought this house with six kids,
What did folk think of us, and all that we did?)
I'm in such a quandry. Can't think any more.
I've just got to find out who's buying next door!

One good thing about it, is the asking price.
If my place is worth that, it would be quite nice.
If new neighbours don't please, I'll just pack up and sell,
I've lived here for years though, and to move now ---Well!

Hey! It could possibly be an old lady like me,
And we could start chatting and have cups of tea.
I could find out where Sally will be, and invite her
to join us. Oh yes, things are looking much brighter!
