THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE

My son dropped grape jelly
On the clean dishes
And didn’t bother to wipe it off

I was thoroughly annoyed
As I wiped it off myself after
I had promised myself I wouldn’t

But today is the best day
Of my life

My aunt called and ranted
As usual about the many
Dysfunctions of my family

I pretended to be interested
Until I couldn’t anymore
Then faked bad reception

Still today is the best day
Of my life

While going through old photos
I realized a few that I cherished
Had somehow disappeared

I hope to find them again;
Somewhere that I put them
for safekeeping then forgot

Yet today is the best day
Of my life

My refrigerator is bare because
Grocery shopping is something
I ‘ve never much cared for

My penance was a lunch of
Two hotdogs on stale bread and
A half-burnt bag of popcorn

However, today is the best day
Of my life

I sat outside on my patio
To enjoy the wonderful breeze
That blew, and listen to the trees

But the smoke from nearby
Forest fires was stifling
So I retreated; trapped inside

Nonetheless, today is the best day
Of my life

This morning when I awoke
I had a list of things to do that
I was determined to complete

Half the day is over and the list
Is not even nearly done;
It yet looms proclaiming my failure

But today is the best, the very best day
Of my life

Because it’s the only one I have;
The others are all gone
And the rest may never come

So today is the best day
Of my life
