I wrote this after The Station fire court case in West Warwick, RI
One hundred people died.
Burned alive.
By two mens recklessness.
Families crushed. Lives torn apart.
Children without fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers.
Is that justice? I don't think so.
A list of names scrolls across the screen .
Pictures of faces. They look so familiar.
Did I know him? How about her?
Had I seen them on the street?
Were they in one of my classes?
I don't know. Just the thought tears my heart.
The pain, the heartache, the trauma.
I should have been there.
I was supposed to go. Good thing she stopped me.
Too many cars. People squeezed in like sardines.
They never had a chance.
Stacked liked logs at the door.
That video forever burned into my memory.
What a tragedy. No. A tragedy is an accident.
This was a massacre.
Inferior products shoved on the walls.
Flames rose and engulfed the world.
Forever scarring the earth.
And what about those who survived.
Scarred for life. Physically, mentally, emotionally.
Mind's fried. All they hear is screaming.
Wishes, prayers, is God on there side.
He seemed to be that night.
Was it truly better to live.
How did they survive? Why me?
Could I live with that question everyday?
I don't think so.
Death lingers in the West Warwick air.
You could smell it for months.
Hard to describe exactly. But certainly there.
Crosses littered on an unwelcome lot.
What will become of it.
A memorial. A park.
Its not for me to decide.
Its up to the victims and families.
What they chose.
It doesn't matter.
It can't replace what they lost.
Just remind them of the pain.

Is this justice? Justice is blind.
Blind to the innocent. Blind to the guilty.
Blind to the victims. Blind to the truth.
What kind of judge lets them walk free.
Probation, community service.
A slap on the wrist.
That'll teach em.
Won't do that again now will they.
So many lives lost.
Does the punishment fit the crime?
They'll walk away and join their families for dinner.
Do the victims have that option?
Doesn't seem fair to me.
Brothers bound by greed.
I hope the endless whispers of 100 souls keep them awake at night.
Someday justice will come. Someday.
