This poem was written with the hope of steering people away from drugs.

Deceived

Wounded and hurting
they look to ease the pain in their hearts.
Lives without direction become
footholds for the devil’s deceit.

“Here, my friend, try a little of this.
You’ll laugh; you’ll feel good.
It’s sure to ease your pain.”

The lie seemed true. They laughed and felt good.
They forgot the concerns of the day.

The devil smirked while he
tore pieces of their lives away...
jobs then home, friends then family.

Shocked by each loss and defeat,
bogged in a swamp of decay –
the devil urged, “Here, my friend,
you just need stronger stuff.”

Satan’s cackle fractures the silence.
Only 24, Kyle died alone today.
