Chapter One Draft

As Max trudged up the hill, he wondered what would happen next. After begging and begging, Mr. and Mrs. Lockten finally let Max have a pet. He had repeated many times that he wanted a dog. Max didn’t know what type of dog he wanted, even after hours of thinking. His friends were all suggesting different breeds and constantly bickered about it. It was tearing them apart.

When he reached the top of the hill, he saw a large cottage with a fenced-in backyard. He walked up to the door and examined the knocker. It was a gold dog head so Max knew right away that this was the place. This was the summer house of the famous dog show champion and breeder, Jack Talso. Max knocked on the door and heard a hardy voice shout “Coming!”

The door flung open and there stood a big man with a red beard and glowing lush red hair. “So you’re the one they called about?” He muttered quietly. “Never mind that,” he said. “I suppose you know who I am, but who are you?” Max answered, “My name is Max Lockten.”

“Aren’t your parents the owners of that big clock company, Lockten’s Clocks?” he asked. “Yep” Max said, “And you’re Jack Talso, the expert dog trainer.” Mr. Talso said, Call me Jack, and please do come in.”

Max entered and saw an expansive room with trophies and filling the cabinets and crowding the shelves. “This area does double duty as foyer and Trophy Room.” Said Jack “Wow.” Was all Max said. Although he was truly astonished about how many trophies there were. After an awkward moment of silence, the phone rang. “If you will excuse me, I’ve been expecting a call.” Jack said in a somewhat uneasy way.

Max caught the tone and wondered why Jack sounded nervous. He quietly walked toward Jack but kept out of sight. The first words Max heard were, “The boy is here.” At this, he bolted out the door.
