Marriage, fixing whats broke, and refusal to follow in parents' footsteps.
Let Us Celebrate

I would like to celebrate an end with you,
an end to tit for tat,
to the words “fine” and “whatever;"
an end to silence when words would suffice;
no more words when silence would be comfort.

I would like to promise an end
to being unsatisfied and unappreciative,
to being aloof and oblivious
to the fact that there really is a difference
between your silence and the absence of words.

I would like a promise from you;
for an end of seeing malice and intent
in my careless errors of judgment,
and my molehills I make from mountains;
an end to assuming I want to hurt you.

I would not like to see
a chasm in our marriage,
an end to our children’s sense of security; us
riding blindly on the patterns and cycles already tread
and paving a path of the same for our children.

I would like to make a wish for both of us:
to have an acceptance of our differences,
an end to our guilty consciences;
no more falling in the trenches left by footfalls
of those who tripped before us.

Let us celebrate an end
to being angry, blind, and resentful,
careless, oblivious, and aloof,
without knowledge of the pain it brings,
without the willingness to end it.
