Why are things so difficult?
I went through another day of brutal training not coming in, even as the sun set.
It wasn’t until midnight that Cash came to get me. I was breathless, aching, and almost broke down. Nothing was right anymore.
A vampire spared my life, Cash fights with me, I kissed a vampire, and had unknown feelings for another. How the hell did any of this happen?
“ Lia, come inside. Get some rest.”
I did as he said and followed him into the house. I went up to my room and took a long shower.
When I finally got to bed, I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I fell instantly into a deep dark blissful sleep.
I woke the next morning around eleven. I sat up and stretched, feeling totally rejuvenated. That is, until I remembered the events that occurred the day before.
I quickly got dressed and ran downstairs. Nobody was home. I ate a quick snack and headed outside. There was no way I was going to go to school, but I had every intention on going for a walk.
As soon as I stepped on the porch I saw that familiar car awaiting me, along with it’s owner, leaning against the passenger side, smiling.
I approached uncertainly.
“ And what may I ask are you doing here?”
“Why, waiting for you of course.”
He opened the car door and motioned for me to enter.
Without really knowing what I was doing, I got in.
He slid into the driver’s seat and started the car, driving us into the beautiful unknown.
“ Where are you taking me?” I finally asked.
“ You’ll see.”
We were driving pretty far into the country.
I absolutely loved nature. And the scenery that was slowly passing us by was breath taking. I stared out the window in amazement as the greens and browns smeared into one.
The car came to a stop on a hillside. I glanced over at Nicholas turning off the car. I opened my door and stepped into the soft breeze. I looked over the edge, bewildered and astonished. Below, through all of the trees, a stream could be heard. The only thing visible was the tops of the lush green trees.
I took a breath of the cool crisp air.
Nicholas finally stood next to me.
“ Why did you bring me here?”
“ No reason.”
“ Well, whatever the reason, it’s beautiful.”
We stood there, having long conversations, laughing and joking like we’ve been friends forever.
That’s when it hit me. I befriended a vampire, and the one that changed my sister.
Even as I thought about this, trying to make myself come back into the reality I was taught to live by, I didn’t care. It was nice to have a friend, even if it was Nicholas.
“ I should probably head home. Cash might get worried.”
We parted from the hillside and walked to the car.
“ What about your mom?” He asked getting in the car.
I waited for him to start the engine.
“ Yeah right. All she cares about is our family reputation. She wouldn’t care if I died.”
“ And your dad?”
I hesitated a little on this. Every time I thought about my father I felt like crying.
“ He uh, he died a few years ago.”
“ What happened?”
“ He got in a car accident. I guess it was the best way for him to go. He loved cars so much.” I said with a smile, tears filling my eyes.
“ Is that why you feel so, comfortable in cars?”
“ Yeah, my dad use to take me for long rides. Just to talk, or just so we could be in the car, to hear the purr of the motor.” I changed the subject quickly before the tears overflowed. “ Well, you already know about my sister don’t you?” He winced at his statement. “ Why’d you do it?”
“ She asked me to.”
“ Why didn’t you turn her down?”
“ I did, but she said she’d kill herself if I didn’t. I knew who she was, that she was your sister. I didn’t want to hurt you, but I guess I hurt you more by changing her.”
Before I had a chance to say anything, he stopped the car.
I looked over confused. My house now stood a few yards away.
I could’ve swore the ride took nearly an hour, and now here we are, at my house, in a matter of minutes.
I opened my mouth to speak but he interrupted. “ You should probably head inside, your brother might get worried.”
I nodded and got out of the car, slowly making my way to the house.
