DREAMING OF YOU

The years together were so pitifully few
and parting was bitter, unbelievably true.
I should be forgetting and moving on
for you are completely, eternally gone.

Yet when sleep comes, so do the dreams,
we walk hand in hand, love has the means
to make the world brighter and happier too.
I'm in seventh heaven when dreaming of you.

I dream in color, isn't that rather strange?
Your dark brown eyes vividly can change
to a hazel-like hue that haunts my mind;
memories of you are perfectly defined.

The bright blue uniform you proudly wear
as you kiss me goodbye, I know you care.
I beg you to stay but I know you will go,
duty is calling, I know - yes, I know.

I must have been dreaming, they had said
that you were killed in action, you're dead.
Reality sets in and I know that it is true.
I will spend the rest of my life without you.

Tears come unbidden, I cry in my sleep.
The morning comes early, pain is so deep
that I turn back to my pillow, as widows do,
and I try to keep on, dreaming of you.
