an essay contest entry about an event that changed my life
The rain drops hit against my window Memorial Day the year 2007. As fast as the drops felt from the sky so did the tears from eyes, and as quick as the sun banished through the clouds so did happiness from my life. As the smell of family, friends and barbeque had surrounded the air all day, I laid in an empty room with only a damp pillow as the witness of the pain I felt. This was the day when reality knocked at my door and I realized that for the past six years of my life I had been played a fool. I knew that my life was forever going to change this day, I had just found out that the one I had shared my life and bed for more than half a decade was leaving without even saying good-bye.

The news came like a bucket of freezing water in a cold winter night. It was Thursday mid-afternoon and I was still at work finishing with my last patient as my scrub shirt pocket vibrates warning me a new text message had arrived. As I opened my phone a smile came as it read from: "NES", but as my finger scrolled down my smile left and confusion set. The remainder of the text stated that the one I loved was just letting me know that this weekend friends from out of town were coming down and that the bags were packed and the ride was on the way and as sorry as it was, I was going to have to spend the weekend alone.

Say what? Friends? Who? Why? How come I can't go? All questions that started to race through my mind, I was so mad that I could not even think right. I immediately called but I got no response, called several more times but no luck time after time. I arrived home about an hour later only my dog BJ greeted me at the door. Try calling several more times even sending texts but all me attempts to communicate and understand what was going on failed, my first of many more to come lonely nights began.

All weekend was the same until finally Saturday my cell phone rang, the number I did not recognize but I picked up just in case and it was!!! It was the voice that a longed to hear, no explanation was given only my phone broke won't be able to call anymore.

It took bravery to call back this unknown number but I did. The phone rang a popular radio tune instead of the ordinary ring...ring that I was familiar to rang. I can even remember it, it rang something like this, "you say you need an answer, you have been played the fool..." wow! Perfect song for the circumstance I remember thinking. A soft female voice finally picked up.
"Hi" said the stranger,
"HI, my name is Kathy, I am sorry to bother but I got a call from this number earlier..." I was interrupted ,
"oh yeah, I know all about, just a sec ok!"
What? You know all about me? How come I don't know anything about you? What was your name?
"Hello" this voice I did recognize. "Hey, sorry but do you care to explain what the fuck is going on here?" I annoyingly asked. "Kathy?" the voice now seemed cold and even a little surprised. "Yeah Kathy! Your girlfriend, the one you left home alone without explanation" I now went from annoyed to burning hot. "Nina, (my nickname) I will be home tomorrow, we can talk then" the answer was rushed as if I gun was being held to the head. A dead silence and then the phone went dead as well.
Uncontrollable crying I started to raise and all in Miami, I think, got to hear a scream that was led out on that afternoon by the one whose heart was being ripped to shreds. It is needless to say the events that follow that weekend. I found out that I had been blind because my relationship had been built in lies and cheats. The 5 year skeletons came out of the closet and I realized that my life had been base on lies.

A year has now passed and I never thought that a broken heart can completely change who you are, the way you seek the truth from lies and the way you take on a new life.
