Midnight Prayers

Making it through the day, alone,
I slowly put my hectic thoughts to rest.
Dancing outside my window are small agile moths
Needing the single light that is my only guest.
Inside the room is an old orange cat
Going to sleep on the corner of my bed.
He shares all my dreams, my laughs and my tears,
Through all my tossing and turning that lies ahead.

Pulling my sheets down, I see books I read last night.
Rich treasures of travel, romance and adventure carry me,
Away from a poor spinster’s life that is such a sad plight,
Years of disappointment have left my heart and soul empty.
Each tick of the clock brings me closer to the stroke of midnight.
Ragged breathing is replaced with a soft gentle peace.
Stars above the house will shine on my dreams that I dare
Seeking the hope that the pain and emptiness will cease.

This poem is dedicated to Pumpkin, my old orange cat who died of cancer in May. (2008)
