DESERT SUN

The desert sun burns down on barren, war-scarred land
where soldiers lay in their armored tanks' elusive shade,
oblivious to the sand fleas, exhausted, they may sleep.
If not their choice, it is still a duty to commitment made.

How long ago they took the oath to serve and protect,
how long ago did they train in another desert's heat?
They stood; young, tall and proud to wear the uniform.
It was their choice, they would never accept defeat.

Yet herein lies the story of these brave young men
who continue on, not without complaint but strong
enough to still hold high the flag, fight for freedom,
and praying together that they may right the wrong.

The desert sun burns down until the blessed night
brings forth another chance to breathe once more.
They carry on, as soldiers do, going back to the tanks
and rumble away to their destiny, unknown before.

How long ago they took the oath to serve and protect,
how long ago did they train in another desert's heat?
They stood; young, tall and proud to wear the uniform.
It was their choice, they would never accept defeat.
