My collection from High School English Class,10th Grade.
The main character in this story is called Gwendolyn.  She is a Royal Princess in the Kingdom of Pendan, and has just turned sixteen. She is married to Prince Andiysies, and they have two children that are twins, Alturas and Gwenavere. In this excerpt, Gwendolyn and Andiysies are to be Coronated and become the third ruling pair in Pendan, along with each of their parents. The excerpt is told from Gwendolyn's point of view, and is a memory from long ago.

The day of the Coronation had finally arrived. I was nervous at the thought of actually becoming a queen, and at the thought of my children becoming prince and princess. When I met Andiysies in the carriage, he just stared at me.

"You are beautiful, my wife. More so than I had imagined. Our children look wonderful as well."

Prince Andiysies was extremely handsome. "You are the man of my dreams, husband, complete with the outfit. And thank you for the complement, but you deserve the credit. you did choose the dress, you know."

By the time we got to King Valient's castle, the slight pressure around my middle was starting to bother me.

"Go on ahead and tell your parents that we are here. I will be along in a moment," I told Andiysies. He glanced at me, obviously a bit worried. "I'm fine, really. Just a bit tired at the moment." My husband got out of the carriage. I sat for a bit longer, until I was sure that I would not have to worry about the pressure. I knew that by the time the actual Coronation and the festivities to follow were over, my belly would be a bit sore. I could only hope that no one would notice anything.

"Ah! Daughter, it's good to see you. You look stunning in that dress, if I may say so." King Amadeus greeted me as I entered the castle. "I am proud that you, my eldest, is to be a great Queen, ruling in harmony with your mother and your mother-in-law. I say, where's Prince Andiysies? Doing last-minute preparations, I suppose?"

"Of course, Father. You know him all too well. How is Irene and her child?"

"She's fine, but Morgan is not. The poor child is ill. I tried to convince Irene to leave the child with a servant, but Irene won't leave her, or bring her out in the cold. So, Irene will not be here."

I hadn't seen Mother yet, and I thought she would have been with Father. When he did not say anything about her, something seemed wrong.

"Father, where's Mother? Is she ill?"

"Your mother is sitting in the Great Hall where the Ceremony is to be held. But..." King Amadeus never got to finish his sentence, for I set off for the Great Hall. I passed Andiysies parents, King Valient and Queen Rachel, on the way there.

Mother looked a bit tired. She sounded that way, too, when she greeted me.

"Gwendolyn! This is a happy day for me, and should be for you, too. It really is too bad that your sister could not make it. I trust your father told you why?" Queen Gwen asked.

"Yes. Mother, why aren't you out talking to Queen Rachel like you always are?" I asked. She stood up slowly, and I understood. "Oh Mother, again? Aren't you tired of having children? This is my eighth sibling, am I correct?"

After sitting down heavily, she replied. "This is your eleventh sibling. To answer your first question, yes. I -am- tired of having children, but I want to please your father. Every time I become pregnant, I hope that the child is male. So far, your brother Andysis is the only boy I have ever carried. I know King Amadeus worries about me sometimes. I'm growing older, and it is becoming harder for me to bear children."

I gave Mother a look of surprise. I did not think that she was that old. She sighed, and began to speak again.

"Gwendolyn, I am -not- young anymore. I was twenty years old when you were born. At the age of twenty-one, I was Coronated and pregnant with Irene. Don't tell me that I should have stayed at home, for it will do no good. This is a day I would not miss for all the world. And, seeing as you are to be a Queen in your own castle, Irene has been named as the heir to the Throne."

My heart filled with joy. "Mother, this is wonderful news. When you return to the castle, give my love and congratulations to Irene, and tell her that I wish she could have been here."

Just then, Andiysies came into the Hall. "Gwendolyn, we must go. The guest will be arriving any moment, and we are not supposed to be seen by them yet. Also, we are to receive a blessing from the Bishop," he told me.

"What about the children?" I asked.

"They are to come as well," was his reply.

Andiysies carried Alturas, while I carried Gwenavere. We went into a small chamber where the Bishop had set up a small Alter. He indicated that Alturas was to be set in the small cradle on Andiysies' side, and Gwenavere in the one on mine. We then kneeled before the Alter.

"Father Almighty, bless the people kneeling before this Alter. Bless their children as well. Help them to rule in Peace and Harmony with the other two Kings and Queens in this Kingdom on Earth. Help their present and future children to follow Your Teachings," the Bishop intoned.

It was my turn to speak. "Oh, Heavenly Father, bless me with many more children. Lead me to live a long life, and my children as well. I pray to You for strength to be a great Queen."

"Oh, Heavenly Father," Andiysies lifted his voice, "bless my son who may become the heir to my Throne. Bless my castle with plenty. Let the Kingdom that I am to help rule be Peaceful. Let my castle be filled with happiness and children."

"King of Heaven, I give these people to You. Guide them as they learn to rule in Your Name. Amen," the Bishop said. Andiysies left, because he was to be Coronated first. I gathered up Alturas and Gwenavere, and went to the Great Hall.

I sat in the very back of the Hall so as not to be noticed, and so I could watch the Ceremony. My Princely husband became a Kinly one. As the final Prayer was being said over Andiysies to confirm him as an official King, I slipped out of the Hall.

I handed Alturas to a male servant, and Gwenavere to a female one. Then I waited for my husband to announce "the fair Princess Gwendolyn" before reentering the Hall. As I walked slowly and solemnly on the deep red carpet, an Incantation in some foreign Language was being said. A monk walked before me, swinging incense to ward off any evil Spirits that might harm me.

Kneeling before the newly crowned King Andiysies, I spoke. "My King, I hereby give myself over to a life of ruling in harmony with my King and the other Kings and Queens of this Kingdom of Pendan. I will obey you as my husband and as my King, and will strive to provide many candidates for the Throne. Heavenly Father, please grant me my wish."

"I, King Andiysies, wish to make Princess Gwendolyn your Queen. Anyone who opposes this decision, speak now and be judged." No one spoke, so he continued the Ceremony. "Princess Gwendoly, I place this Queen's crown upon your head, forever signifying you as a Royal Queen. Rise, Queen Gwendoly, and look upon your subjects."

I rose and turned to look at the commoners. Then I turned back to my husband. "King Andiysies, I will do your bidding as your Queen, servant, and friend." I turned back to the crowd. "I now wish to present to you our son and daughter whom we wish to be crowned Prince and Princess."

The two servants came forward. Again an Incantation was said, and the monk swung his incense.

"My subjects, these are the children Alturas and Gwenavere who are to be crowned on this day." I took a breath. "Anyone who wishes this event to not happen, speak now and be judged."

Again, no one spoke. Andiysies took a small crown from the Alter behind him, and I followed his actions.

"I place this crown upon my son's head, forever signifying that he is a Royal Prince in the Kingdom of Pendan until he is Coronated." Andiysies placed the crown on the boy's head.

"I place this crown upon my daughter's head, forever signifying that she is a Royal Princess in the Kingdom of Pendan until she is Cornated." I placed her crown on the girl's head.

The Bishop gave us a final blessing. "I bless these four people in the Name of the Holy Father. Protect them, Lord, in the course of their lives. Bless the new King and Queen with many children to come and a full and happy life of Peace. They are hereby King and Queen, Prince and Princess of this Kingdom on Earth. Amen."

My husband and I walked out of the Great Hall, followed by the servants carrying our children, and the crowd applauded for us. The pressure on my belly was a small bit more noticeable, and I placed my hand on my belly, trying to relieve some of it.

At the celebration, we were given many gifts, and "wished well" many times.
