The Dark Within

It squirms inside me, in that deep dark place,
It devours my insides, occupying a space,
Where once lived that thing it has stole,
The place where resided my immortal soul.

It writhes inside me twisting like a snake,
The pain it instills in me I cannot fake,
The dark scales glisten even in the dark,
Even on my body it has made its mark.

Its presence is felt to those around me,
Even though it is only felt subconsciously,
A curious look, a curious smile,
Conversations that last only a little while.

Those around me do try to speak,
Unaware that inside I am a freak,
I stare somberly at those who depart,
Life's flavor to me is one so tart.
