Chapter 1
Celebrations

The sea breeze blew across my face. Blowing my blond hair I could feel it whip the back of my neck. The air tasted of salt and the wind carried the sounds of sea birds cries and the waves crashing against the pebbled shore. I watched as a crab scuttled along the sand its small legs moved so fast, it was unlike the ones kept in the lab their limbs remained for but a short time. An experiment on the regeneration of crap claws, interesting I must admit as for the ethics, well I weren’t so sure. I sat down in the sand and stared out to sea, the rough waves contrast perfectly with the grey and cloudy sky. I sighed heavily; the sea was not the place for me. On the hot summer day’s people would pluck up some courage and dive among the rocks, you would get children playing on rubber floats, the older kids would swim out to the large rocks and some would even have barbeques late on in the evening. But for me no way, the sea was off limits. The dark depths scared me, ever since I was young I had had nightmares of sharks arising from the deep and pulling me down, I would wake up to the pop of what I believed to be my lungs, fortunately it was all in my head and I could no longer recall the dream with enough accuracy that it would scare me .

I pushed my feet forward, I had taken my socks off so my toes sunk deep into the sand, I don’t know why I bothered to escape from the lab. At least in there I could be sure of warmth and the satisfaction that any sharks were behind about 6ft of glass. I took in another breath of salty sea air, and lay back against the sand, it sunk around me so to fir my body shape becoming surprisingly comfortable.

I stared up at the clouds. Seagulls circled the beach now it was low tide, searching for the shellfish unable to make there way back into the safety of the sea. I suddenly remembered the little crab I had seen earlier. My thoughts strayed briefly.

I was pulled out of my interesting daydreams by a single droplet of rain, it patted softly against my skin, it then rolled down my face and got caught in my bristles. A few more fell, as it slowly became a downpour. I let the water soak me through as I thought of home. At least it was hot every now and again I told myself. I sighed and climbed to my feet. I was dripping, my shoes had become tiny reservoirs, my black shirt and jeans clung tightly to my body and my hair had matted it was now dripping down over my eyes. Guess it’s time to walk back. I smirked, as I pictured the faces of my superiors when I walked through the door freezing and soaked, happy birthday I said to my self and I smiled the biggest smile I had in the last three months.
