The first house we owned wasn't anything next to what stood behind it.
All I could hear was the dull roar of mom’s lil’ ole chevy mini-van cruising down the highway. My eyes were closed shut waiting for what mom’s big surprise could be. Me and my three brothers, John, Joe, and Matt, were all sitting in the back itching with excitement.
“Mommy, please can we open our eyes now.” Joe squelched with a raspy little voice, recovering from a cold he’d had for the last week.
“Yeah, this is stupid” Johnny commented back without hesitation
“No, Guys I said keep em’ shut” with a big sigh mom started talking back with the new man she’d recently started seeing. He was a quiet guy, with long hair and a beard that made him look like a biker. He hit it off with us right away though when he gave us his super Nintendo.
I said nothing just sat there trying to comprehend what in the world she could be hiding.
Than all of a sudden we hit two thuds, than it became a rhythm section and as fast as it started we stopped. With her softest, sweetest  voice “ Boys welcome to your new home”
My eyes bolted open with awe. We’ve never had our own home before was the only thought that crossed my mind.
John was the first one to slide the van door aside and start jetting toward the house, which looked like a mansion to us at the time.
“Hey wait for me” Joe screamed as he tried to keep on johns heels.
But For us though it wasn’t the house that got us hooked.
I jumped out of the van and ran around the house and with all the excitement a 7 year old could have. I screamed at the top of my lungs. “JOHNNY, JOE…LOOK AT THIS”
I stood there motionless, the boys ran up beside me and the only thing that came out of our mouths were  “ whoa”
It was a football field of a yard. Greenest grass I’ve ever seen, Tree’s as tall as Mt. Everest, and the biggest creek that ever did exist, that encircled the yard like a mote. It was the most beautiful thing we’d ever seen.
“It’s all for you guys” tears now rolling down mom’s face “ Now go play”
Me and john ran into the grass while Joe rolled down the hill on his side. Playing as kids should and that’s where we spent the next five years. Enjoying the freedom and taking every opportunity to be out there, rain, snow or shine.
