The vicious, unforgiving cycle of a bad relationship.
When the dreary day comes to an end,
just take me close, she said,

just pretend,

that you want me and need me and you love me so,
please kiss me and hold me and never let me go.

Let's pretend that love matters
that it takes us somewhere
that "we" is forever,
and I'll have someone who cares.

When the rules are broken and conveniently bent,
just take me close, she said,

just pretend,

that nothing went wrong and everything is okay
that you never strayed from me and never went away.

Let's pretend that childhood dreams do come true,
that they don't simply vanish into the blue,
that life might just become what you wish it to be
that you might just envision what you want to see.

When you hurt me much more than you can ever mend,
just take me close, she said,

just pretend,

that you never really meant to, because you love me so much.
that you will never hit me again, I won't have to recoil from your touch.

Let's pretend that our fate is not forever sealed
and that hope is not a wrong feeling to feel.
That it can work wonders, it has for some.
That it can help me, that love will surely come.

When you silently cry, and my actions I can't defend,
please take me close, he said,

just pretend

that I'm good enough for you and always will be
that I will not be insecure about what you see in me.

Let's pretend that I won't stray because I don't know why I do
that I won't push you away because it hurts me too.
That I won't hit you when I'm mad -- I do love you so.
That I won't help you learn -- I won't make you go.
