A poem I wrote at the early stages of my depression - also for a friend suffering the same
Depression is more than low serotonin levels
It's the souls cry for help…
And the misinterpretation it brings to those around us.

Depression makes you feel the darkness closing in.
Clouding the heart and short-stopping any hope of revival.
Tearing into the soul, and shredding it, ripping it apart.

The way people rip up poems or songs, or hearts…
When they think they've messed up.

Depression is one thing, and many things all put together.
It's self pity, self doubt, to name a few.
It's feeling that even though you bring joy.

You see only hurt and pain
Sorrow and Guilt…

It makes others cry at night for thinking
Somehow they've caused your pain.
It blocks the light of hope.

And a veil of dark, incinerating grief covers you.
Suffocating you…

Till you can't stand it anymore…

You pull the trigger, cut the flesh, and end the pain.
You’ll not see the pain you cause, or the sorrow it brought.

But it actually turns out that your escape from life,
Was a way in for those left behind.

And I will not sleep in this bed of lies.
Let me help to bring you back
Or open the door for me to follow you in.
