For my lovely girl who knows how this feels.
He put me to bed and kept me safe

He held my hand when I got scared

Beat up the kids who hurt me in school

And made sure all my socks were paired.

When I got older he taught me about men

How they hurt and steal and hate

He held me while I cried to him

And scolded me when I came in late.

When I got a family of my own

He taught my children just like me

He watched them through the ages

And grow from one to two to three.

Then he grew old and died one day

I didn’t know how I was meant to feel

I wanted to be sad and cry

Too bad my perfect dad’s not real...
