Short Poem
The winds are closing in,
and the pavement beneath my bare soles
feels frigid.
His body heat withdraws from mine,
leaving me chilled and empty.
Last embrace, last chance, last breath…
The clouds in his eyes turn black
and stormy as the ones above us,
before the frost sets in.
Wishes from my past come back to haunt me,
and with the slamming of a car door
I’m mocked by shooting stars.
Standing faithfully to watch
his taillights fade to streetlights,
I hug myself tightly…
As if two arms are strong enough
to hold back a storm.
