Damsel in Distress

by: Xydia Mae A. Rojas

It was the strangest feeling. She can't seem to live a day without having a glimpse of him. Yet she couldn't bear to look at him when he's near. Just the sound of his voice makes her nervous. It made no sense for her cause she never really liked him. Everything changed in an instant though. When one day when she was sitting near a tree. Arms around her legs and head bowed.

"Here."She looked up. A boy stood in front of her, reaching out a handkerchief.

"Thanks."she said

"Its nothing" He said, smiled and walked away. She stared at him until his shadows disappeared.

Since then they had been close. Each time she needed help, he would appear. It was like she was one of those damsels in distress and he was her hero-her prince charming. But all things do change. And it was when he broke her heart.

"Jen, do you know the feeling when you just cant help smiling each time you see that someone?"Jennifer flushed. She felt her cheeks burning.

"Yeah. I think so." She said without looking at him.

"Jen tell me the truth," Jennifer's heart started to beat fast"Do you...Do you think Alexis likes me?"-her heart shattered into pieces.

"Uhhh...I do'nt know," She paused for a moment "but i think you'd be a great couple, Mike."

Mike smiled and hugged her tight. Unknowingly a tear fell on her face. As long as his happy-she thought.

Jennifer tried to forget Micheal and after they graduated highschool they lost communication. After so many years Jennifer moved on-that's what she thought.

Her boyfriend, Billy, introduced her to his family. All seemed well until-a man came inside the room. He and Jennifer stared at one another. He smiled and absent-mindlessly did the same.

"Ah! Micheal this is Jennifer my girlfriend," Mike's smile faded. "Jennifer, this is Micheal my cousin." Jennifer came back to her senses. The dinner ended well, though Micheal was silent for the whole evening.

"Hey Mike!...Uhmmm...Can you give Jennifer a ride home? I have to go back to the office. Its an emergency." Billy asked.

"Yeah sure." Mike answered.

In the car, Jen tried to break the awkward silence.

"So how are you and Alexis?" she asked without looking at him.

"We broke up." Jen knew it was wrong yet silently she felt glad.

"Why?"

"I dunno. I guess I just realized that I only loved her as a friend..and that i love someone else." Jen looked out of the window. It was raining.

A few minutes later the car stopped.

"Why?Why him?Why my cousin?"

"What?" Jen said-shocked and a little irritated. "I-I-I didn't know you knew each other okay? And I-I love him."

"Why?" Mike said-still angry.

"Because he said something no one else had the guts to tell me...He told me the words I never heard from anyone else-the words you never told me!" Jen bursted out and seconds later regretted it. It just slipped out of her mouth. Micheal kissed her. She kissed him back but pulled away as soon as she realized what she have been doing. Got out of the car and ran away.

She sat near a tree. Her arms around her legs. So close yet so far. She loves him yet it was wrong. There she was again the Damsel in Distress but this time no Prince Charming would come to rescue her. She looked at her hands. On one of her fingers was a ring. Not all stories have happy endings.
