This is an explanation of why it is sometimes productive to stare at walls.
Spare time is something that I have a fair bit of according to outside observers of my life. Apparently sitting and staring at a wall for 45 minutes is not productive. What many of those who have a dig at me about how I spend my time don’t understand is that I probably came up with a joke whilst staring at that wall.

Only the other day I was sitting with my coffee and my smokes fastidiously studying the fading green wall on the south side of my home when a moment of inspiration struck me. A friend popped round shortly after and commented that I seemed entrenched in thought and I said to him.

“You know, I don’t like the brand of biscuits SHAPES.”

“Why?”

“Because they imply that some biscuits have no physical form.”

Now, my friend looked at me as if I were completely bonkers (an argument best left for another time) as I rose from my directors chair, ticked an imaginary over sized note pad and let a feeling of warm satisfaction melt over me. Job well done, comrade. Job well done.

My mate didn’t particularly like the joke. I am pleased to report though, that by placing it in the environment of nonsense that is the rest of my jokes SHAPES, is thriving. Which leaves me thinking that some sort of parallel between jokes being written and chickens incubating their eggs could be drawn.

I’ll leave this entry on a note that I hope to one day be printed on a business card:

Don’t judge your comedians productivity before they hatch.
