The second and last football speech I wrote.Given at the banquet of my senior year.
Here we are. The seasons over, the roads been walked, the games been played. The chapter in our lives that was closing tonight is sealed shut.
Good food family and friendship is a great way to end a great season. We gave it our all, each in their own way, surely there are things some of us wish they could do over but what is done is done and the past cannot be changed no matter how much we wish it. I know that every man gave their all when they wore the pads. Because that’s the kind of men that that field, and that game makes. The field is the anvil the game the hammer and the coaches the guiding hand, that forges young boys who come to them raw fresh faced and more than a little ornery, and shape them into men who can stand tall, on their own feet, and look life in the eye. Were Trojans, and a true Trojan never quits, he never stops; he hits hard, moves fast, and he , grants no mercy, because that’s who we are as men, that’s who the game has or will make every single man here.
Every day we learn something and change just a little, because of that knew knowledge. That’s why we must dive headlong into our own lives. Why we must live, laugh and love, as much as we can while we can, because life is short and u never know when it may be cut even shorter, so we must live life while we can when we can.Senoirs compared to the real world our lives were a story book world, that book is closing fast, and whether we want it to or not, the real world will be waiting for us the moment our eyes leave the pages. All we can do is take the real worlds for what it is take the punches it throws and try to throw a few back when we can.
Under classmen take hold of every practice, every series, and every play, and do as much with it as you can, take this from me and take it to heart…you never know when your last play has happened until after its done, maybe you’ll find out tomorrow or next week, or you might not find out until the seasons over.
And seniors, were done I know it’s hard to accept, even though we all knew it was coming, to a man we all felt blindsided. Sure the best of us may get a few more years but those simply won’t be high school football. So everyone who’s ever played the game Trojan or not, I ask you to look back to the glory days. Your best hits, best runs, best passes, best catches, remember them all , and while you do ,remember your brothers that made each possible.
It’s my hope that though the pads the jerseys and the helmets are all gone from us, and that I’ve been to my last game, well continue to be brothers, that well always be able to share in each other’s hopes, dreams, loves, and goals’ I know many of you better than I know my own family, in a way I think of many of you as family, and as tomorrow dawns I know we’ll still be brothers. Even if my jersey is gone my number will always be engraved in my heart, and on my soul.
I’ve been called a lot of things over the years, my mother calls me bubba,my dad calls me son, my coaches call me carl, and I hope , someday I’ll be called husband, and father, but the mantle that I wear most proudly a name worth more to me than kingdoms, a name that has rested upon shoulders many ,a name that I wear with honor as if it were a crown of gold. That name that mantle is number 78 of tusky valley football.
