A poem about the Irish hunger strikers of 1981.
WE CRIED

We cried,
We sighed,
We prayed the rosary together,
The day that Bobby Sands died,
We cried,
We sighed,
We fought the police,
The day that Francis Hughes died.
We cried,
We sighed,
We shouted never give up! Never!
The day that Raymond McCreesh died.
We cried,
We sighed,
Our prayers did not cease,
The day that Patsy O’Hara died.
We cried,
We sighed,
We sang a rebel song,
The day that Joe McDonnell died.
We cried,
We sighed,
We shouted out in vain,
The day that Martin Hurson died.
We cried,
We sighed,
We wondered what went wrong,
The day that Kevin Lynch died.
We cried,
We sighed,
Strong was our pain,
The day that Kieran Doherty died.
We cried,
We sighed,
We stood there shocked,
The day that Thomas McEllwee died.
We cried,
We sighed,
Our hearts locked,
The day that Michael Devine died.
