Two teens who have been dating for a year finally say I love you.

Thanks for reading this. I'm a little shy about this particular short story, so don't laugh at me too hard...not that I'll hear you, lol, but take it easy on me. I'm such a ridiculous romantic. Anyway, I hope you like it. *Smile*

Max was starring. The girl in front of him giggled. “What’s up with the stare. You look like a…” She laughed at herself, knowing she wasn’t goo d at such metaphors. She thought a long time ago, guys would never find her funny because of that, but Max proved her wrong. He’d been laughing at her jokes for three years now, two of those as her flirty friend, and one as her boyfriend.

When he didn’t stop starring, she blushed. She didn’t know what was wrong. She’d bought a new outfit just for today, their anniversary. She’d been careful not to get carried away with the makeup. He’d almost brought her to tears with a selection of her favorite flowers at the door, but she didn’t wear eyeliner so that couldn’t be it. She knew the answer would be in his eyes, but didn’t dare look at them. Her heart raced every time she saw them and lately something tingled along with her raced heart. The last time, it was so strong, she couldn’t breathe. She wanted to feel it again, but feared the intensity. It was scary to imagine it came from Max, who she thought only asked her out in a sort of pity for a never been in a relationship friend. Even more scared, because it might be just her imagination getting the better of her. She’d known how strongly she could love Max from the moment they met. She was so happy when they became friends. If this wonderful feeling was all hers and not from Max, she didn’t want it to get her hopes up that he felt the same way.

Max continued to stare. Finally, she swallowed and looked up into his eyes. The feelings struck, but quieter than last time. She recovered happily and knew what to do. She put her face two centimeters away from his and said, “Boo!” Max blinked, relieving her. She mock frowned at him, saying, “That was so weird Max. Do you stare at all the girls like that?”

Max smiled at her. “You have no idea, do you?” he thought. Jokingly he teased, “Only you my sweet” knowing it would make her blush. He laughed inwardly. “It’s so obvious we’re meant to be together. I wonder if she’s felt it yet.” He’d been trying for weeks now but Vicky hadn’t said anything yet. He was trying to be careful, knowing she’d never had any experience with guys. He didn’t want to scare her away with too much. He wasn’t even sure if she loved him yet. He knew he loved her, known it from the start, but Vicky had been so scared of her own skin back then. When they first met, it was obvious Vicky needed a friend to help boost her confidence and he was glad to play that role. It was the perfect way to get to know her without the pressure of having to impress him as a girl. His inner self cheered when she was ready for a relationship, and even happier she wanted her first boyfriend to be him. He didn’t know how he would have handled another guy entering the picture.

Knowing Vicky so well made wooing her the best time of his life. Receiving all her smiles, witnessing all her blushes, making her laugh; these were the things he treasured most about her. It was incredibly hard not to tell her all at once how he felt. Only the fact that he might scare her kept it in.

He smiled again when he realized Vicky was still blushing at the ground. He ran his hand through her hair, leaned toward her ear and whispered, “Vicky, don’t make me kiss you.”

Vicky was blushing so hard now. Max was just joking of course, but it was so easy to imagine there was more to his words. Before she could stop herself, she was caught up in a day dream of Max leaning forward and whispering how much he loved her in between kisses. It almost made her cry. What if Max was still being her friend and just trying to catch her up with the rest of the world. He hadn’t said I loved you yet. Did he love her?

Max was worried when he saw a tear escape Vicky’s eye. Why was she crying at the same time she was smiling? Why would his comment make her sad and happy? Max’s eyes widened. Vicky really didn’t know how he felt. Maybe she didn’t even think he was trying to tell her. Well, he had to fix that. He gently lifted her head up and eased her mind that he wouldn’t make good on his threat.

Closing his eyes too as he pulled Vicky closer, he could hear all the passion of her heart floating into his ear. “I love you.” He didn’t mean to, but his wall cracked and everything he’d kept inside he sent into Vicky. If that wasn’t enough to tell her he felt the same, he deepened their kiss.

Breathlessly, Vicky pushed him away. Max tried to hide the hurt in his eyes, but knew he couldn’t. Every window was open to her now. There was no way he could hide anything now. She wouldn’t even look at him. Ready for the fear he would see or worse, the rejection, he blinked when he saw nothing but her. “I can’t breathe Max.”

He couldn’t think. “What?” When it hit him, he smiled, and then laughed.

“Max!” she yelled, embarrassed.

He was so relieved, he grabbed into a hug and a kiss. Shocked, Vicky pushed him away again, breathing as if it was hard. He laughed again. “I promise Vicky, Ill leave you alone now.”

Vicky couldn’t believe it. It really was him. He’d known the entire time what he was doing to her. On top of that, he’d been holding back.

She gulped. “How long?”

He starred at her with those wonderful eyes again. “Since the first moment I saw you.”

So much joy was floating through Vicky she didn’t know what to do. Max loved her. As long as she had loved him, he’d felt the same way. He started coming toward her swearing he would leave her alone again. Vicky had to admit, she didn’t really want him too but was glad she could just rest in his arms. He whispered, “Vicky I know I said I’d leave you alone, but I really want to say it. I love you” Vicky let his words sink again before she said, “I love you too.”
