Some like it hot, while other's do not... First place winner, 10-20-12
Sarah blew her bangs off her forehead. She wiped her hands on the dish towel and studied the list of things that had to be done before Martha arrived.

She sighed; I think this list is multiplying every time I look at it. I’ll never get done. She’ll be so angry.

“Sarah! Where on earth are you? The script is not in my dressing room. Sarah!”

She’s here already! Oh no! Sarah scurried around the prep kitchen trying to make it look like the chores were done.

“Sarah! Well finally!” The almighty Martha spewed out, “Where’s my script? Where’s my tea? Where’s Buster’s bone? What have you been doing all day?”

Sarah meekly looked around. “I didn't realize you’d be in this early. Let me get to that right now.” She turned, wringing the towel nervously in her hands. Sarah grabbed the kettle, while the diva stood talking doggie gibberish to Buster, who decided to mark the kitchen.

Sarah rolled her eyes at the dog, over-filled the kettle, and proceeded to mark the kitchen herself.

“Sarah, you’re making such a mess. We have a show to do. You know the kitchen has to be pristine.”

Sarah sighed. “The show will be taped in the studio kitchen, not the prep kitchen for pity’s sake.” She stood up straight, her eyes practically bugging out of her head, stupid woman, you said that out loud!

Martha gasped, stomped her foot and stormed off toward her dressing room, muttering about the impertinence of those beneath her. “Joey!” she screeched, then Sarah heard the door slam.

She swallowed hard. She plopped her elbows on the counter. Way to go, Sarah. You’re going to get fired. Her eyes narrowed; well, I might as well have some fun. Sarah looked at the list again, Dessert- Devil’s Food Cake. Sarah knew what she was going to do.

Her baking finesse had earned her the prestigious position that turned into being a real-life Cinderella to Martha’s evil stepmom persona. She prepared a beautiful Devil’s Food Cake, with a little extra fun tucked inside.

Then she started preparing the ingredients and mock ups for the studio kitchen. Perfect presentations, as always, then Sarah took her position beside Joey.

The audience arrived, the diva made her grand entrance to begin the live show. Joey was ticking things off the master list. The show was moving along perfectly, the final segment opened.

“This is my favorite Devil’s Food Cake.” The diva breezed through the steps, making it seem so effortless.

Sarah grinned like a Cheshire cat, watching each motion leading to that first bite of cake.

Martha’s eyes widened, her mouth was on fire. She started to sweat. I can’t spit it out. I’ll have to swallow it. “Mmmmmm, it’s so delicious.” Following the script, she forced another bite down.

Sarah smiled at Joey, “That’s what I call Devil’s Food. Hope it’s as much fun going out, as it was watching it go in!” And she left the studio, head held high.
