A poem I wrote about raking leaves on a crisp fall day with my girlfriend.
Author's Note: I know there are some flow problems with this, but I've tried to re-write it a few times and nothing else seems to fit just right. Please feel free to suggest alternatives!

The smoky air fills my lungs,
A pleasant, pungent twist.
My heart sings,
My smile hums;
I wish we'd stay like this.

The wind swirls in chilly waves,
My heart skips a beat,
Because of you,
I’m saved -
You’ve swept me off my feet.

Red, orange, yellow, maroon.
The colours dance in the sky.
Love, hope,
Promise, trust.
I see it in your eyes.

I swing my arms around and low,
Picking up some leaves,
And as I throw them in the air,
I finally believe.

Believe you won’t pretend,
Believe this is all true.
Believe,
As my heart is unsheathed,
That it is safe
With you.

The leaves twirl like ribbons,
A tango with the wind.
Their colours are reminiscent
Of the fire that’s within.
The leaves fall now,
Gathering and catching the ground.
Beneath my feet they surrender,
A familiar crunching sound.

The representation changes,
They’re no longer just leaves.
They’re things I hated -
The sadness in me.

Together we rake them up,
Together we push them down.

Together,
We are free.
