About a family gathering
Independence Day

All of them gathered at my house
To celebrate the Fourth of July.
Five brothers, their wives and a sister.
It was crowded. I won't lie.

I stressed the whole week before it
'Cause I couldn't get everything done.
I was by myself this holiday
And just knew it wouldn't be fun.

He used to clean off the patio
And mop the kitchen floor,
And even followed behind me
To re-do and clean some more.

I missed him more this week for sure.
It was my birthday, too.
Perhaps it all just hit me at once
But I just felt so blue.

My sons came with smiling faces
And hugs and gifts and fun.
The grandkids helped to fill the void
As we all played in the sun.

Independence Day fireworks
Lit up the dark night sky.
My mood improved. I began to smile
On this lovely Fourth of July.
