The Turning Point

Jane rushed up the stairs as soon as she heard her mother’s door lock click. She had to be quick, Mother could come back at any moment and Jane would be sent away. Mother hadn’t let her see her grandmother all week, saying she was ill and could be contagious. Jane didn’t believe it.

The only reason they were here at all was that it was stipulated in her father’s will, that they needed to be here when Jane came into her inheritance, when she turned twelve, or it would not be legal. However, once they arrived, they were told they it would be another week at least. They had to stay. Mother was furious.

Jane turned the knob quietly, slipping into her grandmother’s room and closing the door behind her. Suddenly shy, she stopped, she didn’t want to scare her grandmother, plus, she hadn’t actually seen her since she was five and her mother moved them to England after the divorce. But as soon as the door closed, she heard a familiar voice.

“Come in child, I’ve been waiting for you!”

Unexpectedly shy, Jane peeked around the corner. There sat an old woman with long gray hair and bright sparking eyes, smiling at her.

Suddenly Jane’s mind filled with memories, every minute she had ever spent with her Grandmother rushed back, from their first meeting after she was born, to the day Jane had been ripped out of Grandmother’s arms to board the plane to England. Then she heard a voice directly in her mind, Grandmother’s voice, as clear as if she were speaking out loud.

“Come my darling,” Grandmother’s voice said, “I’ve waited so long for your twelfth birthday! We can never be parted again no matter where your mother takes you.”

Jane ran into her grandmother’s arms.
