The Storm

“This storm is getting worse, hang on!” Ren yelled.

“OK!” Ted yelled back, grabbing the nearest solid thing he could find, as the onslaught of water hit them hard.

As the rain finally started to let up a bit, they dared to move, shaking off the layers of water that had soaked in. “I’ve never seen a storm like this. It’s so intense. And the sky isn’t even cloudy!”

“Maybe things really are getting worse, like some are saying...”

“I hate to admit it but you may be right. First it was the fields getting shorter, over and over again. Then the weird trees popping up, so thick, and not even having leaves on them at all. And those stupid giants and their big stupid feet.”

“Oh no! Here comes the rain again, hold on!!!” A torrential rain blasted through again in a huge burst as the two clung on for dear life.

“Next... time... it... lets... up,” Ren shouted, “be... ready... to... run!”

“Which... way?”

“To... that... big... tree!” they both hung on till the rain finally started slowing, and then they bolted as fast as they could toward the house.

Inside the house, Sandy and Alex were sitting in the window watching. “Do you think they were just playing?” Sandy asked.

“I don’t know, they looked a little scared. Do you think they could have been scared of the sprinkler?”

“I think they were just trying to take a shower...” Sandy said finally.

They both burst out laughing.

Just under the open window, the two squirrels were exhausted after their escape from the sprinkler. “Ren! are you hearing this? This giant tree is talking!!! Let’s get out of here!!!!”

The two squirrels told the story of the giant talking tree many times. Nobody ever believed them.
