This little beetle has fascinated many kids. Contest entry
On a warm, humid day, at the time of dusk
my family took refuge on the porch.
A storm had passed and our lights were off.
The willow trees' limbs swayed in the gentle breeze.
My husband held my hand as we sat on our new swing.
In the sun's last beam of light, little motes of dust danced.
Our senses enjoyed our awareness of all around us:
the smell of flowers,
the sound of crickets and frogs,
the taste of fresh lemonade,
and the feel of the movement of our swing.
But unexpectedly, my eyes focused on a small yellow light that began to glow.
A few feet away, there was another glow.
It was firefly season.
The unique little bugs were here to give us a show of moving, blinking lights that would remind me of the first time in my childhood when I saw one.
This nocturnal bug helped me relax and enjoy the special time I felt as I did, when I was a child.
