Flash Fiction
Sundaes

“Sandy, Mom and Dad are looking for you,” Alex said.

“Tell them I’m not here.”

“Why?”

“I’m sure they want to talk about me being late getting home last night.”

“So?”

“So I don’t want to talk about it. I stayed late to talk to Jeremy and they wouldn’t understand. I was only a little late.”

“Why wouldn’t they understand?”

“Because they’re old and they’ve forgotten what it’s like to be nutty over somebody.”

“I hope that never happens to me.”

“It probably won’t, you’re a guy.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Guys are so dense! Jeremy doesn’t even know I exist!”

“Did you talk to him?”

“No, he got a ride home with Terry Brand before I got a chance.”

“Well, he’ll probably be at the game later, why don’t you go?”

“Really? I will! Just tell Mom and Dad I’m next door right now, I don’t want to talk to them about it now.”

“OK.”

“Did you find Sandy?” Dad asked.

“She said to tell you she was next door,” Alex said.

“Oh, well, Mom already made her a sundae...”

“I believe I can probably eat two...”

“OK. I bet Sandy will be sorry she wasn’t here!”

“Maybe.”

“Oh, by the way, your Mom got a call, the game this afternoon is cancelled. Something about the field being flooded.”

“Huh, well, in that case Sandy will definitely be sorry she wasn’t here for the Sundae.”

“I don’t understand,” Dad said.

“I think it’s a teenage girl thing.”

“In that case, I’m not the least bit surprised I don’t understand.

“Me neither!”

“Let’s eat the Sundaes!”
