Clearing the Picture

I stand just inside the doorway looking into the room. This happens too often these days.

“I don’t remember why I came in here.”

I say it out loud because there’s no one else to hear it. My son and his wife are both at work, their kids at school. It’s just me in the house, wondering again why I came into the room I’m in.

I was sitting at the kitchen table having a last cup of coffee before getting busy, and something came to mind. Something so urgent I had to do it immediately! Or... was it something so small I thought I might as well get it done right away and get it over with? Or... was it something I needed for what I was about to do next? What was I about to do next? This is getting old...

I saw an ad for memory enhancers the other day on TV and I actually thought about them for a minute. But then I worried that it was a scam, so many things are these days, and how would I know?

Suddenly I caught sight of a piece of paper by the lamp and it all came back to me. I wanted to look up where to buy the sunscreen I saw on TV. No odor sun screen!

Oh my gosh I was relieved, and embarrassed at the same time. Relieved that I wasn’t crazy, embarrassed that it was such an unimportant, and silly to jump out of a chair to do, chore.

Well, I guess that’s my lot in life these days. Retired, moved in with my kids, taking care of them and their kids, worrying about stupid little things. But then, surrounded daily by my favorite people.

How did I get so lucky?
