The Room Incident

Mom stood in the doorway, actually blinking in awe of the scene before her. Tommy’s room looked like it had been hit by a cyclone. While she could see his furniture, still in place, she couldn’t actually see furniture. Everything was covered with heaps of clothes, toys, even papers which had to have come from her recycling bin.

Finally, getting a grip on herself she said, “What happened here?”

“They made me do it.”

Mom looked at Tommy, six years old, and she had spent every day with him, well, at least for part of each day once he got into school. She has never understood him. But she shook it off again. He was her son, and she loved him so much.

Quietly, and with no hope, anymore, of a real answer, she said, “Who, Honey, who made you?”

“The Quezarts.

This was new. It kind of shook Mom, and gave her hope at the same time. All the doctors said he’s grow out of this, whatever it was. “Wait for a sign,” they’d said. Something will change as he grows out of it.

“Who are the Quezarts?” Mom asked, praying that he gave her some answer that would give her hope.

Tommy looked at her then said, “They think it’s funny to do stuff like this. They’re brats!” then as if listening, or deeply thinking for a moment, he said, “They think it’s time you met.”

“Time we met?” Mom said, surprised.

“Is it OK?”

“Yes,” said Mom, afraid of what would happen next, but determined to support Tommy no matter what.”

Suddenly the room filled with sparkly lights. Mom fainted.

“I told you it was too soon!” Tommy yelled! The lights went out.

“Sorry!” came many voices out of the air. Mom didn’t hear them, of course.
